Abstract This paper presents the buckling response and vibration characteristic of cylindrical steel liquid storage tanks filled with water when subjected to strong earthquake excitations. Finite element analysis (FEA) is performed by using ABAQUS software. The geometrically perfect different R/t H/R ratios are considered for modal linear seismic analysis. modeling method, appropriate type, necessary number elements numerical recommended. Field observations during past earthquakes published experimental results used substantiate accuracy employed FEA. current design guidelines assessed based on extensive parametric study.
